Wayanad: In one of the worst landslides of Kerala, as many 80 people have been reported dead Wayanad district. Over 100 are injured and and several missing toll might go up, officials said.

Officials of the State Disaster Management Authority told reporters tgat the landslides occurred in Meppadi panchayat, Vythiri taluk, at 03:49 this morning

The landslides were triggered by torrential rains in the region. Scores of houses, bridges and roads swept away due to the landslide.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the civil defence force, the Army, and the fire department landed in quick time.

After which the Indian Air Force and the Navy were also joined in the rescue operations.

 NDRF, Civil Defence and Navy teams are the spot. The rescue work has begun ,Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters.

As many as 225 Army personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, as per an official statement. 

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the entire state government machinery was actively involved in the efforts, with ministers overseeing and coordinating the rescue operations.

The Southern Command which is based in Pune has pressed into service its two rescue columns along with two Indian Air Force’s (IAF) helicopters from the Sulur Air Force Station in Coimbatore to be deployed in landslide hit district.
