Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case, has been found guilty. “A sessions court in Kolkata has held main accused Sanjoy Roy as GUILTY in the RG Kar rape-murder case," reported Live Law.

He was found guilty of rape and murder governed under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reported news agency PTI.

The court will declare his sentence on January 20. 

Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was charged with committing the crime on the on-duty doctor at the state-run hospital RG Kar Medical College and Hospital  on August 9 last year.

The crime led to nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by junior doctors in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim and adequate security arrangements in state-run hospitals.
