The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kolkata's Sealdah on Monday, has sentenced Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital ,to life in jail.

The court has directed the state to pay the victim's family a sum of Rs 17 lakh as compensation.

During the pronouncement of the sentence at a local court in Kolkata this afternoon, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, said he has "not committed" the crime and is "being framed", reported NDTV.

Sanjay Roy was found guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Saturday ( 18.01.2025).
