Pune: In a significant move, the Pune Railway Department has sent a proposal to the Railway Board for increasing platforms at the railway station. The railway administration said that this proposal is being seriously considered, and we have sent a proposal regarding it to the railway board for consideration.
This decision to expand the platforms along with the remodelling of the Pune railway station has been taken to ease the burden on these platforms with the consideration of handling an increasing passenger load over time at this station.
Pune Railway Station is one of the most important stations in the country. One and a half lakh passengers travel from this station every day. This station has not been expanded in many years. There are six platforms at Pune railway station, two of which are long enough to accommodate a 24-coach train. Therefore, remodelling of the Pune railway station is being planned for a few years. But, as this work was very complicated and difficult, it could not be started.
Last year, some progress was made on this project, and the plan for this work was also prepared. But, due to some administration difficulties, this project was stalled again.
Considering the passenger importance of the Pune railway station, this project is necessary; however, the project needs to be planned accordingly so that it cannot affect the regular traffic of the station. Pune is one of the crucial stations for passengers travelling south and north. More than 150 trains run from this place daily. So it is very difficult to initiate any work in this place.
Considering the expansion of Pune city, some more platforms are required at this place. So, while remodelling, everything has to be considered and done carefully. In this regard, the railway department is planning to build four new platforms at Pune railway station. If these new four platforms are included in the remodelling plan, the stress on the Pune railway station will be reduced in the next few years.
Presently, there are six platforms at Pune railway station. There is no more space to extend the platform. Therefore, there is a plan to extend the platform of the station at Madhakka towards Mumbai. Accordingly, the Pune Railway Department has planned to construct four new platforms at Maldhakka. Connecting the old and new platforms is easily possible through pedestrian bridges. Also, after the expansion of the old six platforms, 24-coach trains will also be able to run from there.
Indu Dubey, the divisional railway manager of Pune railway station, said, "A proposal has been sent to the Railway Board to construct four new platforms at Pune railway station. This new platform is planned to be built in the area along Maldhakka."
