Pune Faces Waterlogging Chaos Due to Negligence in Pre-Monsoon Preparations

Pune: Pune city is grappling with severe waterlogging issues following a deluge of rain, exposing significant lapses in the municipal corporation's pre-monsoon preparations. Within just a few days of rainfall, large amounts of water accumulated on roads, leading to widespread inconvenience for residents.

Citizens are directing their frustration at the municipal corporation, accusing it of negligence in essential pre-monsoon infrastructure work, particularly the inadequate drainage system. The poor condition of city roads, mismanagement of drains, and delays in their cleaning have compounded the plight of Pune's residents.

Last week, Pune experienced a significant amount of rainfall, resulting in waterlogged streets in many areas. Major roads such as Kharadi to Narvir Tanaji Malusare Road (Sinhagad Road) and Baner to Katraj were submerged in water, resembling rivers. This has caused a lot of inconvenience to people.

The root cause of this problem appears to be incomplete pre-monsoon activities, such as uncleaned drainage networks, and the negligence of municipal officials, who were preoccupied with managing the Lok Sabha elections and adhering to the model code of conduct.

With the first rainfall of the season, several parts of Pune were quickly submerged. Streets turned into rivers, but when questioned, municipal officials, as usual, blamed the heavy downpour over a short period, effectively shirking their responsibilities. It is evident that the municipal corporation failed to take adequate precautions for rainwater drainage.

Additionally, the municipal corporation is currently under administrative control rather than elected representatives, as elections have not been held for the municipal body since March 2022. Residents accuse the administration of ignoring their concerns. Despite the need to halt road digging before the monsoon, many parts of the city still have ongoing roadwork.
