Pune: In the backdrop of the Kalyaninagar car accident case, the Pune Municipal Corporation has started a crackdown on unauthorised construction in big hotels, restaurants, and rooftop hotels in the city. In the first phase, the Pune Municipal Corporation identified 60 places with unauthorised construction in the civic limits and removed the encroachments on the area of 54,300 square feet of 54 hotels on Wednesday.

The Construction and Development Department of the Municipal Corporation informed that action has been taken against hotels in Kalyaninagar, Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Ghorpadi, Pune Railway Station, and the Vimannagar area.

A list of 60 hotels with unauthorised constructions or encroachments has been prepared by the Pune Municipal Corporation. Out of them, action was taken against 54 hotels on Wednesday. It included three big hotels and 44 small and other hotels that are on the borders of the corporation's jurisdiction. Further action has been taken against seven rooftop hotels.

Notably, the construction department also reported that several of the penalised hotels had faced action multiple times earlier.

The issue of pub culture and nightlife has come to the forefront in the city after a teen-age accused rammed a two-wheeler while being drunk, which killed two individuals on Saturday night. After that, many people, including Kasba MLA Ravindra Dhangekar, appealed to shut down these pubs. The city administration took a serious note of this and decided to reassess the rooftop hotels with the city.

Consequently, actions against unauthorised encroachments by hotels have commenced, and these structures are now being demolished.
