PCMC Announces Delayed and Slow Water Supply on July 26 Due to Increased River Turbidity

Pune, July 26, 2024: Pune and the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad city experienced heavy rainfall yesterday, July 25, resulting in significant waterlogging throughout the city. Various establishments along the riverbanks were submerged, and river water entered several societies and houses, causing widespread disruption to people's lives.

Due to the heavy rains, the turbidity of the river water increased drastically, leading to a substantial strain on the pumping system at the Rawet Pumping House. This situation caused a technical failure at the pumping house, which the administration is currently addressing. Consequently, Chief Engineer of PCMC, Shrikant Savane, announced that the water supply in Pimpri-Chinchwad would be delayed, with reduced pressure and quantity on July 26.

“In the wake of heavy rains, the turbidity of the river water has increased significantly, which has created pressure on the pumping system at Rawet Pumping House. As a result, there was a technical failure at Rawet Pumping House, and the administration is working on its repair. Therefore, the water supply during the day will be later than usual, with less pressure and less quantity,” Savane stated.

Given the rainy season, there is an increased risk of waterborne diseases spreading through the drinking water. To ensure the health and safety of residents, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is taking the necessary precautions to provide clean and pure water. As an additional measure, the administration has advised citizens to filter and boil their water before consumption.

Meanwhile, the rain has paused in Pimpri-Chinchwad since this morning, allowing for some respite. However, by yesterday evening, over 2,800 residents had been relocated to safe areas in shelter centres and municipal schools by the city's disaster management cell.
