Tejas Navale
Pune:The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Thursday that the monsoon has officially entered South Konkan and South Madhya Maharashtra, bringing much-needed relief from the summer heat. This advancement of the monsoon covers most of Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Sangli, as well as parts of Ratnagiri, Satara, Solapur, and Dharashiv districts. The northern boundary of the monsoon's progression currently runs through Ratnagiri, Solapur, Medak, Bhadrachalam, Vizianagaram, and Islampur in West Bengal.
The IMD predicts that favourable weather conditions will allow the monsoon to reach Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of the state within the next three to four days. Over the past few days, heavy rains have already been observed in the districts of Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, and Sangli, along with the neighboring state of Goa.
The IMD reported that cloud density over these areas and the wind flow-shear zone at 16 degrees latitude in the atmosphere indicate the monsoon's advancement into Maharashtra. This year's monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 30, two days earlier than the usual date. Despite the early arrival, the monsoon continued to progress steadily up the west coast due to favorable weather conditions, reaching South Konkan a day before the normal date.
Typically, the monsoon progresses through Maharashtra between June 7 and 15. With the monsoon's arrival, the IMD has forecast rain in several areas of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra from June 7 to 11. During this period, heavy showers are expected, particularly in coastal and ghat areas.
The early onset of the monsoon brings hope for farmers and residents who rely on the seasonal rains for agriculture and water supply. The IMD's forecast for continued rain in the coming days is a positive sign, as it suggests a robust monsoon season ahead. This development is crucial for replenishing water reservoirs and ensuring adequate water supply for various needs across the state.
As the monsoon continues its northward journey, the residents of Mumbai, Pune, and other regions eagerly await its arrival, anticipating the cooling and rejuvenating effects of the seasonal rains.
