Farmer Dies In Leopard Attack
A farmer died in a leopard attack at the Kadethan village in Daund taluka of Pune district on Saturday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Latabai Baban Dhawade (50), a resident of Kadethan.
According to forest officials, Latabai was working in a sugarcane farm in Kadepathan when a leopard attacked and dragged her, causing her death around 2 pm on Saturday.
Latabai is survived by her husband and two children. Her death has created concern among residents of the region.
On November 17, a three month-old baby boy had died in a leopard attack at Boripardhi village in Daund. The deceased, Vishnu Gaikwad, belonged to a family who were employed as sugarcane farm labourers. The victim's mother had kept him in a cradle as she went out to work in the sugarcane farms. Around 4 pm, a leopard attacked the boy and dragged him into the farms. His mother shouted for help. Labourers at the spot ran after the leopard to rescue the boy. The leopard left the baby in the farms and ran off. The injured baby was taken to a hospital, but he died.
Madhav Mohite, deputy conservator of Forest, Pune, said both the incidents took place during daylight.
“Presence of leopards in the region has increased. Necessary action is being taken to prevent the leopard attacks. We have installed trap cages at certain locations and are creating awareness among villagers,” said Mohite.
Four year old Shivtej Samadhan Tembhekar had died in a leopard attack at Mandavgan Pharata village in Shirur taluka of Pune district on November 15.
