New Delhi: In an interim order passed on Monday, the Supreme Court stayed trial court proceedings in a criminal defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for alleged defamatory remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reported news agency IANS.
The complaint was filed by a BJP worker in 2019. Gandhi had allegedly referred to Shah as a “murder accused” during one of his public speeches in Chaibasa ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath took note of the submission advanced on Rahul Gandhi’s behalf that only an aggrieved person and not a proxy third party can institute a criminal defamation complaint, news agency IANS reported.
