Rising Dengue Cases In Pimpri-Chinchwad: 57 Infected In Two Months Despite Prevention Efforts
By Tejas
Pune, August 11, 2024:The number of dengue cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad is on the rise, with 57 people having contracted the disease so far. Additionally, seven cases of chikungunya have been reported, though both Zika virus patients in the city have recovered and been discharged.
The increase in dengue cases has been particularly notable since June. In response, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation launched a dengue prevention campaign aimed at curbing the spread of the disease. The campaign includes awareness efforts through social media, city malls, and cinemas, with a focus on encouraging residents to clean their homes and surroundings weekly. Despite these measures, the number of dengue cases continues to climb.
The municipal corporation's health department is conducting extensive surveys in Pimple Gurav and Nigdi, areas where Zika cases were identified. So far, 13,544 homes have been inspected, and samples have been taken from 26 suspected dengue patients and 23 pregnant women. Tests conducted on these samples have returned negative results for the virus.
In an effort to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, the city has inspected commercial establishments, housing societies, and residences. Fines are being imposed where mosquito breeding sites are found, with over Rs 24 lakh collected since June 1, according to Assistant Commissioner of Health, Ajinkya Yele.
Dr. Laxman Gofane, Medical Officer of Health, assured that while there are active cases of dengue and chikungunya in the city, the condition of the patients is not serious. Many have already recovered and returned home. He urged residents to ensure that water does not accumulate in containers around their homes and advised those experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
