Pune, September 26, 2024: In response to heavy rainfall and the forecast of more to come, Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase has declared a public holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad on Thursday, September 26, 2024. This precautionary measure follows a weather warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), which has placed the district under an orange alert.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Pune, prompting the district administration to take immediate action to ensure public safety. Dr. Diwase issued the order to close educational institutions across the district as a preventive measure in light of the forecast.

The city of Pune experienced heavy rainfall throughout the day yesterday, leading to numerous incidents of uprooted trees and water seepage in residential areas. Traffic congestion was also reported in several parts of the city due to waterlogging. In response, the district administration decided to suspend classes to avoid further disruptions and accidents.

Meanwhile, the IMD has also issued alerts for neighbouring districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, and Nashik, where heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds are expected over the next 24 hours. Pune remains on orange alert, with the meteorological department advising residents to exercise caution during this period.
