Pune, July 25, 2024: For the last two days, Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. Last night, Pimpri Chinchwad recorded an alarming 72 mm of rainfall. In response to the ongoing downpour, the Collector and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman, Dr. Suhas Diwase, announced a holiday for schools on July 25. This closure affects Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, Bhor, Velhe, Maval, Mulshi, and Khadakwasla.

The heavy showers in the catchment areas have significantly increased water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam. As of 2 a.m., the discharge volume reached 40,000 cusecs and is expected to rise further, potentially leading to waterlogging in the city’s low-lying areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune city, forecasting heavy rain in the coming hours. The IMD has advised residents to remain indoors and venture out only for essential purposes.

Meanwhile, floodwaters have begun entering residential societies along Sinhgad Road. The parking lots of Dwaraka Society, Jalpujan Society, Sarada Lake Society, and Sham Sundar Society have been inundated. Residents have been advised by the administration to take the necessary precautions. Local authorities are on high alert, and emergency services are prepared to assist in cases of severe flooding.
