Pune, September 14, 2024: In a bid to curb reckless driving, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Traffic Police have been taking stringent action against drivers flouting traffic rules. The sight of drivers with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on their mobile phone has become alarmingly common, contributing to increasing road accidents.

The situation is particularly worrisome at night on the Pune-Mumbai highway, where many drivers engage in phone conversations while driving. Additionally, motorcycle riders riding with headphones have led to fatal accidents, with some even losing their lives.

College students are also a concern, often speeding with mobile phones in hand, oblivious to horns from other vehicles. This distracted driving has been the cause of multiple accidents, prompting increased action from the traffic authorities.

Rs 45.82 Crore Collected in Fines Over Eight Months

Between January and August 2024, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Traffic Police took action against 4,06,299 unruly drivers, collecting fines amounting to a staggering Rs 45.82 crore.

Mobile Phone Usage While Driving: Rs 1.5 Crore in Fines

Among the violations, 10,354 drivers were caught using their mobile phones while driving, resulting in fines totaling Rs 1.49 crore in the same period.

Legal Action Against Drunk Drivers

The crackdown also extended to those driving under the influence of alcohol. The traffic police filed 2,620 cases of 'Drunk and Drive' in court over the past eight months.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bapu Bangar, of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Traffic Branch, emphasised the importance of following traffic rules: "Drivers must obey traffic regulations. It not only helps reduce accidents but also ensures smooth traffic flow. Regular action is being taken against reckless drivers to improve road safety," said Bapu Bangar.
