Maharashtra train accident: At least 6 killed after train runs over passengers who jumped on track fearing fire

Mumbai: At least 11 persons were killed after they stepped down from their train on the tracks and were run over by another train coming from the opposite direction in North Maharashtra's Jalgaon district on Wednesday evening, Central Railway official said.

Nashik Divisional Commissioner, Praveen Gedam says, "As per the information, 11 people have died in the accident and 5 others are injured."

The accident occurred near Pachora station, where Pushpak Express had halted after someone pulled the chain due to a rumour of fire on board around 5 pm,reports Deccan Herald.

Central Railway's chief spokesperson Swapnil Nila said , "An ACP occurred in Train No. 12533 Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express, at km 372/07 in the UP direction, between Maheji and Pardhane. The train stopped at the spot, and some passengers got down from the Pushpak Express. Seven to eight people were injured by the passing Train No. 12627 Bengaluru-New Delhi Express in the DN direction on the nearby track at around 5 pm. Arrangements for ambulances to be sent to the spot have been made in coordination with the local administration authorities. An Accident Relief Train has been dispatched from Bhusaval, and Central Railway is making all efforts to provide medical aid to the injured passengers."

Authorities are investigating the tragic incident.
