After delay of 10 years, polling for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections began today.
The polling is taking place for 24 out of the 90 Assembly constituencies. Of these,16 are in Kashmir and eight in Jammu. The counting of votes will be on October 8.
In Kashmir, the National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are fighting for honours. In Jammu, the contest the BJP and Congress are at loggerheads.
Kashmir saw aggressive campaigning, with enthusiastic public participation. The scene was no different in Jammu province.
PDP and NC besides Congress and BJP are the major political players.
The PDP campaigning was more about attacking BJP. Its leader Mehbooba Mufti was right upfront.
The NC’s campaign attacked PDP and BJP. It attacked PDP for “betrayal” after it joined hands with the BJP to form a government in 2014.
Both PDP and NC have promised to return of Article 370 and statehood to J&K.
The Congress and BJP campaign was not much aggressive like the PDP and NC.
