Establish 'Sakhi Savitri' Committees in Schools, Urges Seema Sawale

Pimpri: In recent years, numerous cases of sexual abuse involving minors in various educational institutions across the country have come to light, with a recent incident in a school in Badlapur East serving as a disturbing example. This shocking event has raised significant concern within society. Ensuring student safety is the fundamental responsibility of every educational institution, necessitating immediate and stringent actions. In a written appeal to school management, former Standing Committee Chairperson Seema Sawale emphasized the need to establish 'Sakhi Savitri' committees in schools, as outlined in a government circular dated March 10, 2022.

The incident in question involved the sexual assault of two three-and-a-half-year-old girls attending nursery class in a reputable school in Badlapur. In response, Seema Sawale expressed her outrage, stating, "Such incidents instill fear among parents, making them hesitant to send their children to school. Schools are meant to be sanctuaries for the comprehensive development of students, but such occurrences tarnish that sanctity." She referenced the Child Rights Protection Act, under which the State Government's School and Sports Education Department issued a circular on March 10, 2022, mandating the formation of 'Sakhi Savitri' committees to ensure the safety of students and foster a healthy, equitable environment in all schools. Unfortunately, Sawale noted, this government directive has not been effectively implemented.

Seema Sawale stressed the need for educational institutions to adopt crucial measures to prevent sexual abuse of students. This includes mandatory police verification for all teaching and non-teaching staff, continuous monitoring of employee behavior, and the establishment of robust security systems within schools. Important steps such as installing CCTV cameras, employing security personnel, and educating students about sexual exploitation are vital. Additionally, schools must create an effective grievance redressal mechanism to ensure swift action on any complaints, holding guilty individuals accountable. Sawale also urged schools to maintain regular communication with parents to discuss any child-related concerns.

Educational institutions must adhere to the government order by forming 'Sakhi Savitri' committees and implementing various safety measures to protect students. Seema Sawale also assured that Jijai Pratishthan is ready to provide full support to schools in these efforts. Former Corporator Asha Dhaygude-Shendge accompanied Seema Sawale in delivering letters to the principals of various schools.
