Corning Launches Rabies Awareness Campaign with Serum Institute

Pune :- Today, Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW), one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science, announced the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign in India on World Rabies Day. The campaign will support the World Health Organization’s(WHO) “Zero by 30” goal of eradicating rabies-related deaths by 2030.Serum Institute of India and Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) will help drive the campaign with Corning.

“At Corning, we believe in the power of community engagement and education. By supporting the WHO’s Zero by 30 initiative, we are continuing to play our part in reducing rabies cases with awareness and prevention,” said Sudhir Pillai, Managing Director, Corning India. “Together with Serum Institute and SEWA, we can make a significant impact.”

Rabies is a preventable disease that continues to pose a significant threat to public health, particularly in developing regions like India – and especially in rural areas. The new campaign will help educate communities about the importance of vaccinating pets, seeking immediate medical attention after animal bites, and the critical importance of vaccinesin eliminating the disease.

“Vaccination is the only way to prevent rabies,” said Dr. Ashish Sahai, Additional Director, Viral Vaccines, Serum Institute of India. “We are committed to ensuring that vaccines are accessible and affordable to all, thereby taking a significant step towards a rabies-free India.”

Specific initiatives will include educational workshops, the distribution of informational materials, and vaccination drives. By directly engaging local organizations, healthcare professionals, and volunteers, the campaign can reach more communities and make a deeper impact.

“This campaign also seeks to empower local communities, particularly women’s groups, to lead the fight against rabies, because empowering women and communities with knowledge about rabies prevention is essential,” said Reema Nanavaty, Director, SEWA.“The campaign will help us reach those most at risk, ensuring that every individual has access to the information and resources needed to combat this deadly disease.”

Corning has played a vital role in India in for more than 60 years. Within the past two years, the company opened its Wireless India Development Center to help global and Indian enterprises adopt 5G technology and also established a joint venture with SGD Pharma for a new glass-tubing facility. Last year’s joint venture with OptiemusInfracom will bring the first-ever local cover-glass finishing plant to India’s growing mobile consumer electronics industry, stated a press release.
