Pune: In a significant decision taken by the Varkari committee, it has been decided to permit 90 Varkaris to accompany the departure of the palanquin of Dnyaneshwar Mauli. This measure aims to prevent a repeat of last year’s scuffle between Varkaris and police officials.

Every year, the Palanquin of Santshreshtha Dnyaneshwar Maharaj embarks on an on-foot journey from Alandi to Pandharpur. Traditionally, a few revered palanquins are allowed to join the procession. Last year, 56 palanquins were permitted, each accompanied by 75 Varkaris. However, some Varkaris attempted to enter the temple illegally, leading the police to intervene to prevent a stampede. The situation escalated when Varkaris tried to bypass the blockade, resulting in a lathi charge by the police to control the crowd. This incident caused a considerable uproar.

To avoid a similar situation this year, the Varkari committee, under the leadership of District Magistrate Mahindra Mahajan, decided to restrict the number of Varkaris to 100. Present at the meeting were key dignitaries from the Varkari Association and Dindi Chalak Malak.

This year, 90 Varkaris will be allowed during the Ashadhi period. To prevent stampedes, the Varkari Association has decided to limit the number of Varkaris to 56 Dindis, including 47 revered Dindis and 9 sub-Dindis. This decision has been made to ensure that the Palkhi ceremony is conducted smoothly, avoiding the issues faced in the previous two years.

The Varkari Association demanded the number of Varkari be increased to 100 to accompany Palanquin. However, only 90 Varkaris are allowed this year. The proactive steps taken by the Varkari committee and the support of the local administration are expected to facilitate a peaceful and orderly pilgrimage this year.
