Pune: Over the past two days, torrential rains have caused significant disruption on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, particularly near the Amrutanjan Bridge area. Water accumulating from the slope beneath the bridge resulted in severe waterlogging, with depths reaching up to one and a half feet.
This situation made it extremely difficult for motorists to navigate the waterlogged section, leading to many vehicles getting stuck and causing major traffic blockages. This led to the formation of long queues of vehicles, an unusual occurrence for this stretch of the Expressway.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the substantial water accumulation. According to the information, the area experienced 216 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours on Saturday, followed by an additional 140 mm on Sunday. The heavy downpour at the top of Lonavala Ghat worsened the situation, as water flowed down from the mountain area towards the road, creating additional challenges for commuters.
A video capturing the heavy rainfall in Lonavala, near Borghat, has gone viral on social media. The footage shows vehicles wading through knee-deep water on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Khopoli, highlighting the severity of the situation. Lonavala recorded an impressive 240 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Commuters are advised to stay safe and be alert while travelling on this route. The authorities are working to resolve the situation and restore normalcy on the Expressway as quickly as possible.
