Pune: D Y Patil International University, Akurdi, Pune, has been honoured with the “Trailblazer in Semiconductor Engineering” award by Navabharat Education Excellence Awards 2024.

This award comes as a recognition of DYPIU being the first university in launching B.Tech in Semiconductor Engineering in India. Designed with the future in mind, this program is set to revolutionize engineering education by offering students unparalleled opportunities to engage with the latest advancements and technologies in the semiconductor industry.

D Y Patil International University makes history as it becomes the first private university in India to develop dedicated infrastructure for Semiconductor Engineering. This pioneering initiative aligns with the Government of India's vision for a thriving semiconductor ecosystem. It underscores our institution's dedication to nurturing innovation, addressing industry needs, and to equip students to take up leading roles in technological progress. Thebcurriculum and state of the art infrastructure has been developed based on insights and recommendations from industry experts.

The Indian government granted approval for the establishment of three new semiconductor manufacturing facilities as part of its flagship incentive program. These facilities, sanctioned under the initiative "Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India," were virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13th March 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions that India will transform into a semiconductor manufacturing hub, heralding a significant stride towards technological self-reliance and global competitiveness.

By 2027, the semiconductor industry in India is expected to face a shortage of 250,000 to 300,000 professionals across various verticals, including research and development (R&D), manufacturing, design, and advanced packaging, according to a report by Team Lease Degree Apprenticeship.

Dr. Prabhat Ranjan, Vice Chancellor, D Y Patil International University highlighted that the semiconductor revolution is poised to generate thousands of new jobs within the upcoming four years.

India's strategic collaborations with leading semiconductor firms such as Qualcomm, Infosys, Foxconn, Micron, Wipro, Tata Motors, HCL, TCS, and L&T underscore this trend. Moreover, Indian semiconductor professionals are increasingly sought after in countries like the US, Taiwan, UK, Canada, South Korea, Germany, Japan, and China.

India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) estimates that by 2026-2027, India's semiconductor industry will require approximately 1.5 million skilled workers and 5 million semi-skilled workers across the value chain, marking a significant escalation from current figures. This demand surge is fuelled by the necessity for expertise in chip design, manufacturing, testing, as well as allied industries such as materials, chemicals, and logistics.

In view of this development, D Y Patil International University is in the process of establishing state-of-the-art infrastructure for semiconductor engineering, marking a significant milestone in our pursuit of academic excellence and innovation. "As the semiconductor industry is poised for exponential growth, our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to excel in this dynamic field," stated Shri Tejas Patil, Trustee of D Y Patil Prathishthan, Akurdi.
