After Heavy Rain, Akurdi Flooded By Drain Water
Pune: THE suburb of Akurdi on Sunday witnessed water-logging of the worse kind. This happened after heavy rain which pounded Akurdi area after 4 pm.
As rain battered Pimpri-Chinchwad, residents of Akurdi suffered the most as drains overflowed leading to water-logging in areas like Duttwadi, Vithawadi, Sai Darshan Nagar and other localities.
Almost all storm water drains overflowed. The nullah passing through the gaonthan area of Akurdi overflowed as the water could not move ahead. As rain subsided, residents found themselves walking through waist-deep drainage water.
Residents complained that despite repeatedly drawing attention of the PCMC, civic officials remained negligent. ''We had repeatedly reminded PCMC in last one month that storm water drains need repair. We also asked them visit the spot. When they visited Akurdi area, we took them around and showed them the state of the storm water drains. The officials promised to take corrective action. But they did not nothing. As a result, today we were submerged by rain water and drain water,'' said civic activist Iklas Sayeed who is associated with local voluntary organisation.
Sayyed said he had told PCMC officials that the storm water drain which empties its contents in the nullah passing through Akurdi failed to do so on Sunday. ''This is because the storm water drain had been blocked by some construction work carried out by a civic contractor. And that is the reason why all storm water drains were found flowing,'' he said.
PCMC officials who visited Akurdi area after they were flooded with complaints by citizens remained clueless. They told residents that they will find the exact reason for the flooding tomorrow.
