Yesterday, on May 23, the reactor of Amudan, a hardener manufacturing company located in Phase 2 of Dombivli MIDC, exploded and caught fire around 12:00 p.m. The blast was so terrifying that it caused huge damage to nearby companies, shops, and residential buildings. The fire spread to the neighbouring companies, while the explosion shattered the windows of many shops and residential buildings.
After the incident, victims were admitted to AIIMS and Neptune private hospitals for emergency treatment. The names of the persons who died in the accident are yet to be ascertained.
According to the primary information, the accident happened due to the explosion of the boiler in the company. But it is said that the owner did not take any permission for this boiler. During the investigation, it came to light that there was no authorised boiler in that company. After this, the police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the owners of the company, Pradeep Mehta and Malay Pradeep Mehta.
After this terrible explosion, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site and said that a government level decision will be taken regarding the relocation of hazardous chemical companies in the Dombivli MIDC area out of the city.
Meanwhile, the accused owners of the Amudan factory, the Mehta family, which caused the deaths of 11 people, have absconded after the case was registered against them. Thane police informed that a total of five teams have been formed to nab the accused. According to Thane Police, proper precautions were not taken regarding the chemical processing and storage of raw materials, because of which the explosion took place in the factory.
