ABVP Stages Aggressive Protest at SPPU, Clashes with Police Over Inaction in Ganja Incident

Tejas Navale

Pune, May 31, 2024:  A few days ago, 750 grams of Ganja were found in the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) hostel. In response, various organisations demanded stricter action against the accused students. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) issued a 10-day ultimatum to the university administration to address the issue. However, no action has been taken by SPPU, prompting the ABVP to protest today.

During the protest, ABVP students became aggressive, leading to a scuffle between protesters and police on the university premises. The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the university administration by shouting slogans like "Bharat Mata Ki Jay" and swinging flags in the air. Later, the students sat down and continued shouting slogans on the university premises.

The protester took the stand of continuing the protest until strict action could be taken against the accused. The students further alleged that the university administration is deliberately backing the accused.

On May 14, 750 gram of Ganja were found in hostel number 8 of Savitribai Phule Pune University. The university administration was expected to take strict action. But the student organisations have alleged that the administration is trying to suppress the matter. Earlier, student organisations gave an ultimatum to the university to take action in this regard. However, as 10 days have passed and the university has not taken any action against the accused, the students conducted a protest today.  Surprisingly, the university committed to forming a commission of inquiry to look into this matter in depth. The university, however, did not keep its end of the bargain.
